Navigation: The process or activity of accurately ascertaining one’s position and planning, and following a route.
Navigation has been a huge part of my trip round Britain. Before every passage I have to make a detailed passage plan to ensure that I can arrive at tidal gates and waypoints at the right time. This is fundamental to having a safe passage because of the many navigational hazards around the British coastline. For example sandbanks, offshore wind farms, shipping lanes and of course the land itself!
When I am navigating I use a mixture of paper charts and modern electronic equipment. Thanks to Fox’s Marina & Boatyard I was able to have a number of Raymarine electronics installed which allow me to perform pinpoint navigation and see my position, course, speed and a whole range of other things at a glance!
